College of Idaho Loses Pair to Eastern Oregon

CALDWELL, Idaho – Eastern Oregon swept a doubleheader from the College of Idaho, winning game one, 4-0 in eight innings and the nightcap, 9-8 to snap a 17-game home winning streak for the Yotes on Tuesday.

College of Idaho (28-8, 14-4 CCC) surrendered four unearned runs in the top of the 8th to end a scoreless tie in game one. The nightcap saw the Yotes score five runs in the bottom of the seventh and have the tying run on third as the Mountaineers came away with a sweep of the twinbill.

Game 1
With the game scoreless, like game one on last Tuesday (Mar. 29), this time it was the Mountaineers who came away with the win. Eastern Oregon plated four unearned runs in the top of the eighth – three of which came in on a home run by Madison Stateler.

For the Yotes, Haley Loffer had two of the three hits for C of I in the loss.

Eastern Oregon, who was limited to four hits in the win, got its first run on the scoreboard when a ball was misplayed by College of Idaho when Karsyn Zaragoza scored from first base. Then, after an infield single, Stateler hit a three-run blast to stretch the lead to 4-0.
The game started with each team, stranding a runner at third in the first inning. After that, it was a pitcher's duel between Katelyn Wilfert for College of Idaho and Amanda Smith for Eastern Oregon. Both went the distance in the contest as Smith came away with the win to raise her record to 13-3. Wilfert was the tough-luck loser, falling to 9-3.

Game 2
The second game, like the first game, took away before the offenses caught up to the pitching as the two teams were scoreless through the first three innings.

After giving up a solo home run to Stateler to lead off the fourth inning and the Yotes tied it in its half of the inning. In the inning, Tanner Higgins tripled just inside the right-field line to start the inning. Next, Jones brought in Higgins on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1.

The two teams each plated two runs in the fifth to the game at 3. For the Yotes, Higgins brought in one on a sacrifice fly and Jones picked up her second RBI of the game on a single.

With the game tied at 3, Eastern Oregon regained the lead in the sixth when they scored four runs on four hits. Three of the runs came in on a three-run home run by Crist. The Mountaineers added to their lead with two unearned runs in the seventh for a 9-3 lead.

Down by six, College of Idaho sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits. Hruza started the inning with a solo home run to start a comeback by the host Yotes. C of I managed to load the bases for Kaylee MacDannald, who delivered a two-RBI double to cut the deficit to three, 9-6.

A Brinley Iverson RBI ground out made it a two-run game, then Loffer walked to load the bases for Kylie Smith. The Yotes' second baseman delivered a RBI single up the middle to make it a one-run game and put runners on the corners for Hruza, who was walked to load the bases. Next, Higgins came back to the plate for the second time in the inning. She managed to hit a fly ball in the gap between left and center field that was tracked down by the Mountaineers for the final out.

Hattie Hruza, Lindsey Jones and Lauren Gordon recorded two hits apiece as the Yotes had 10 hits. Caitlin Crist and Kayla Berg each had three hits to lead an EOU offense that recorded 12 hits.

Next, College of Idaho will look to return to its winning ways with a series against Bushnell. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. at Symms Field.
