VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A two-run home run in the first and a two-RBI double in the second by
Kaily Christensen propelled visiting No. 6 College of Idaho to a 6-2 win over host University of British Columbia on Friday afternoon.
The four RBIs by Christensen match a season-high for the sophomore from Woodland, Washington, who is playing just four hours from her hometown. Leadoff batter
Kaylee MacDannald tied a season-high, scoring three runs for the Yotes, who raise their record to 33-8 overall and 18-4 in the CCC.
British Columbia, who falls to 15-14 overall and 12-10 in the CCC, was limited to four hits off the pitching of
Katelyn Wilfert. Two of the four hits came from Mia Valcke in the loss.
For the Yotes, in the circle, Wilfert went the distance and struck out four as she raised her record to 12-3 on the season.
MacDannald led off the game with a walk, she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Sydney Zachry. Then, Christensen hit her fourth home run of the season for the early 2-0 lead. Then, the one-two punch of Christensen and MacDannald led to two more runs for the Yotes in the second inning. After a pair of walks, including a second one issued to MacDannald, the C of I third baseman ripped a double to score MacDannald and
Lysette Villegas, who led off the inning with a walk. With a 4-0 lead,
Lexi Navarrete picked up a RBI single in the fifth to put the visitors ahead 5-0.
The Thunderbirds cut into the lead, scoring twice in the sixth to make it a 5-2 game. The Yotes answered with another run on a RBI single by
Tanner Higgins in the seventh for the final margin.
The weather forced the two teams to play just one game on Friday and will resume the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (PST)/noon (MT).
