CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho picked up two more wins at the friendly confines of Symms Field to pull off its second-straight doubleheader sweep of Carroll College on Saturday.
The College of Idaho (26-5, 12-3 CCC) picked up wins by a 5-1 and 5-4 margin in the doubleheader sweep as C of I extends its home winning streak to 17 with the two wins. The two wins saw a balanced offensive attack and solid starting pitching by
Annie Polster in game one and
Ambrie Jones in game two for the 'Yotes.
Game One
The first game saw the two teams trade solo home runs to start each half of the inning. College of Idaho added to its lead after a
Haley Loffer home run when
Kaily Christensen doubled down the left-field line to score
Kylie Smith for an early 2-1 lead.
With a one-run lead in the sixth inning, C of I scored three in the sixth for the final margin. The 'Yotes got back on the scoreboard when
Katelyn Wilfert hit a solo home run to stretch the lead to 3-1. Then, they added to their lead when
Sydney Zachry laid down a sacrifice bunt with runners on second and third to plate Lexi Navarette for a 4-1 advantage. Then, later in the inning, a bases loaded walk to
Tanner Higgins provided the final margin.
Christensen added a single in the bottom of the third for her second hit and her eighth multi-hit game of the season. Starting pitcher
Annie Polster went four innings, allowed five hits to raise her record to 6-1 and Wilfert came out of the bullpen to finish the game with three innings of one-hit relief for her second save.
Game Two
The nightcap saw
Lauren Gordon and
Lindsey Jones each pick up a pair of hits to go along with a run scored and a RBI as the 'Yotes pulled out the 5-4 win over the Saints.
RBI singles by Gordon in the first and Jones in the fourth put The College of Idaho ahead 2-0. The 'Yotes added two more runs in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. The Saints made it a one-run game when they plated three in the fifth – two of which came in on a two-RBI double by Amber Brewer.
The College of Idaho picked up an insurance run which proved to be the difference in the game when
Hannah McNerney reached on an error by the Saints to score
Hallie Holland, who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk. Holland moved to second on a wild pitch by the Saints and to third on a ground out by the 'Yotes. With runners on first and third, McNerney hit a ball to the Saints' third baseman that was misplayed.
The Saints mounted a threat in the seventh that would plate a run before McNerney got a foul out to right field to end the threat and the game.
For the 'Yotes, Jones pitched five innings and allowed eight hits to go along with a strikeout to raise her record to 3-0. McNerney pitched the final two innings for her third save, allowing four hits and picking up a strikeout.
Next, College of Idaho will travel to Eastern Oregon on Tuesday, Mar. 29 for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. (PST) / 3 p.m. (MT).
