EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 24 College of Idaho women's soccer program took down Carroll in the first round of the CCC Women's Soccer Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, taking the final by a score of 3-2.
Newcomer of the Year
Gianna Yslava got the scoring started just 10 minutes into Tuesday's action, scoring off an assist by
Larissa Wegner to give the Yotes an early 1-0 lead. She would strike once again in the 20th minute, her second of the game, as the squad jumped out to a two goal lead just 20 minutes into the game, as the lead would hold for the remainder of the first half.
Carroll's Jayme Sheridan got the scoring started for the Saints, scoring in the 69th minute. Sheridan would score again just three minutes later to tie the game up at two. Then, with just two and a half minutes left, senior
Lily Schlake took a free kick from the top of the box that found the back of the net as the Yotes would take a 3-2 lead, which would hold to be the final.
"Tournament soccer is always different. I loved how we started and did well going into the half," added head coach
Brian Smith. "However, 2-0 leads are always challenging. Full credit to Carroll as they were the aggressors to begin the second half and they got back into the game. We continue to learn about ourselves and this teams grit and fight is second to none. Gianna showed why she is the Newcomer of the Year with a pair of goals. When we needed her most,
Lily Schlake shows why she is one of the best players in the conference. Win and move on, that's the name of the game at this stage."
The Yotes will be back in action in the CCC Semifinals tomorrow.
