CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho was dominant in a Saturday sweep of Eastern Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Symms Field.
In Game 1, the Yotes (17-7, 8-0 CCC) needed just five innings to win 11-3 over the Mountaineers (7-13, 4-4 CCC), with C of I then handling EOU in five innings again in Game 2 by a 14-1 final.
With the wins, the Yotes have now won 11 straight games, a streak that is just one more victory away from equaling the record of 12 in a row set back in 2012.
Trystin Crofts plated
Haley Loffer with an RBI single to left in the bottom of the first of the opener, with two Eastern errors after that in the inning eventually bringing Crofts home.
Up 2-0, C of I added another run in the third on a
Tanner Higgins RBI groundout to short which scored Hruza.
EOU fought back for two runs in the top of the fourth to make it 3-2, however the Yotes would outscore the visitors 8-1 the rest of the way, starting with a Loffer blast in the bottom half.
C of I secured the victory with a seven-run fifth inning. Some offensive highlights from the frame included a
Hannah Mikel double to the gap in left-center that brought in Hruza and a
Lauren Gordon two-run single the opposite way to right.
Kylie Smith added an RBI base hit, while
Trystin Crofts brought in a pair on a hit of her own.
Kaily Christensen ended the game with a sacrifice fly to score Smith.
Loffer went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI while Crofts was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Hannah McNerney (7-3) battled through four innings to pick up the win in the circle, striking out four and scattering five hits and two runs.
Annie Polster picked up the first save of her collegiate career by working the final inning.
Polster (5-0) continued on the mound in the second game of the doubleheader, yielding five hits and an unearned run over five innings. The freshman struck out four and walked none.
The lefty bat of Loffer wasted no time giving Polster run support, launching an opposite field home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first. Smith then scored later in the inning on a Hruza infield single.
Five C of I runs in the second and six in the third opened the lead up to 13-1 as the offensive explosion eliminated any thoughts off an EOU comeback attempt.
A pair of home runs in the third highlighted the hitting efforts for the Yotes, with Smith smashing a two-run shot over the fence in left for her first of the season, followed by
Lacie Miller connecting a on three-run homer later in the inning.
Smith finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs. Crofts and Christensen each tallied a pair of hits.
C of I hosts EOU once again on Sunday for a doubleheader which starts at 1 p.m.
