CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho remained unbeaten in conference play with an impressive 3-1 win over No. 12 ranked Eastern Oregon on Sunday afternoon at Simplot Stadium.
By knocking off the Mountaineers (7-2, 4-1 CCC), the Yotes (8-2, 5-0 CCC) take sole possession of first place within the Cascade Conference.
The win is the seventh consecutive for C of I dating back to Sept. 10 at George Fox, putting the squad just a win away from tying the 2009 team for the longest winning streak in program history.
Additionally, the Yotes have scored three or more goals in five straight contests for the first time in the history of the women's soccer program.
On Sunday, EOU found the net first in the 27th minute after Kaitlyn McLeod stole the ball away and fired a 30-yard looping shot into the upper left corner of the net to make it 1-0 Mountaineers.
The Yotes responded in the 33rd minute with a
Lily Schlake penalty kick goal that was made possible by
Payton Anderson forcing a handball by the Mountaineers. On the goal, the keeper initially went right and Schlake made her pay with a shot that went the opposite direction and into the net.
Another opportunity presented itself in the 42nd minute following an EOU foul that gave C of I a free kick.
Alexa Rierson took the kick from 21-yards out straightaway and buried the shot into the upper back-right corner to give the Yotes a 2-1 lead.
Early in the second half,
Kaitlyn Ramon joined the scoring party with one of her own in the 47th minute. Once again working out of a free kick opportunity,
Chloe Teets looped a perfectly placed ball which Ramon headed in for her first goal of the season. The 3-1 lead would hold up the rest of the way.
C of I outshot the Mountaineers 6-5 for the contest, with EOU holding a slim 14-13 edge in shots.
Hannah McFadden had two saves in a scoreless second half for the Yotes and
Shae Waters made two saves and yielded the one first half goal.
The Yotes continue CCC play at Providence next Friday at 3:30 p.m.
