Yotes Split Doubleheader With Eastern Oregon

CALDWELL, Idaho – Marissa Maddox went 4-for-6 with her team-leading ninth home run and four RBI, as the College of Idaho split a doubleheader with Eastern Oregon at Symms Field.

The Mountaineers (7-25, 3-14 CCC) grabbed a 6-5 victory in the opener, before a 4-run fifth inning rally by C of I helped the hosts claim Game 2, 6-1.

Eastern stunned the home fans with a 4-run first inning in Game 1 – taking advantage of two errors by the Coyotes (27-7, 13-4) – with a Shevan Defreitas RBI single and a Brandi Bowling 2-run single giving the visitors the early lead.  C of I cut the margin to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame, as Maddox delivered a run with a ground out and both Delaney Atkins and Taylor Eakle lined RBI singles.

The Yotes pulled even in the third on an Eakle RBI single and took the lead in the fifth on a bloop Hannah McNerney base hit – but EOU regained the lead in the sixth on a long 2-run homer from Sarah Bonner and held C of I scoreless in their final two at bats.

Eakle went 3-for-4 in the loss for C of I, with Maddox and Kylie Smith each logging two hits, while three Eastern players had multi-hit games.

C of I took a 2-0 lead the first inning of Game 2 – as the first four batters singled, the last a Maddox RBI knock – with Haley Loffer scoring on a wild pitch to extend the lead.

Bonner pulled Eastern within a run with a fifth inning solo homer, however, the Yotes answered in the bottom half of the frame. Trystin Crofts ripped a 2-run double down the left field line and Maddox followed with a towering home run to left to complete the scoring.

Colette Robert allowed just four hits in picking up her 14th win of 2019, with Crofts going 3-for-3 and Maddox adding two hits.

The two teams will close the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
