Southern Spoils Yotes Senior Day

CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon spoiled Senior Day for seven College of Idaho student-athletes, as the Raiders swept a doubleheader from the Yotes at Symms Field.

Gabby Sandoval tossed a 4-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory in Game 1 for the Raiders (42-7, 24-3 CCC), with SOU scoring 12 times in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 15-5 win in Game 2.

Southern got all the runs they needed in the first inning of Game 1 – as Lauren Quirke blooped an RBI single to left field. The visitors capitalized on two errors in the fifth inning, scoring a run on a pinch-hit Katrina Winterburn ground out and an Allie Stines RBI single.

Sandoval did the rest, striking out seven and working out of a first-and-third, one out jam in the seventh to pick up her 27th win.

Colette Robert was the tough-luck loser for the Yotes (35-13, 20-7), allowing just three hits and one earned run in a complete game effort. Stines had two hits for SOU with Haley Loffer recording a single and double for C of I.

The Yotes had a pair of leads in Game 2 – getting back-to-back doubles from Trystin Crofts and Marissa Maddox in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead – and erasing a 3-1 deficit in the third on the strength of a Crofts RBI double, a 2-run Delaney Atkins single and a Brielle Stephens run scoring base hit.

However, SOU took advantage of five C of I errors in the fifth and sixth innings alone – scoring seven times in the fifth and five more runs in the sixth – to take the mercy-rule decision. Monica Deadmond had a double and four RBI and Paige Leeper slugged her third home run of the season in the rally.

Olivia Mackey had three hits for the Raiders, with Crofts logging a pair of doubles for C of I.

The game marked the final home games for seven C of I seniors – Robert, Atkins, Maddox, Hailee Kiser, Haylie Hudson, Bentli Corta and Emily Aspden.

The Yotes hit the road to Ashland, Ore., next weekend for the Cascade Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, meeting British Columbia in the first-round on Friday at 11:30 a.m. (PT)
