CALDWELL, Idaho –
Colette Robert tossed a 2-hit shutout and slammed a 2-run home run to propel the College of Idaho to a 6-0 victory over the University of Providence at Symms Field.
Game 2 was suspended in the top of the first inning due to rain – with UP (0-5, 0-4 CCC) holding a 1-0 lead after a leadoff homer from the Argos Taylor Mathews.
Robert was dominant – allowing just two base runners through the first six innings – while her offense scratched across six runs, finishing the afternoon with no walks and seven strikeouts to log her seventh win of the year. C of I extended their win streak to five and improved their best start to a season in program history.
The Yotes (16-2, 4-0), who received votes in this week's NAIA Top-25 poll, took advantage of three UP errors in the first three innings to grab a 3-0 lead after three innings. Two dropped pop ups on the infield led to a second inning C of I run, while in the third, the Coyotes put runners on second and third with no outs thanks to a hit by pitch and an error, with
Bentli Corta following with a 20-foot infield hit down the first base line to plate
Delaney Atkins from third and
Marissa Maddox scored on a Robert infield out.
C of I doubled their lead in the fifth as
Alyssa Goff laced an RBI single up the middle and Robert followed with a long opposite-field two-run blast.
Six different C of I hitters had one hit – with
Trystin Crofts roping her team-leading seventh double of the year in the first inning.
Argos starter Brieanna Clifford allowed just six hits in five innings of work in the loss.
Tomorrow, the teams will resume the suspended game at 2 p.m. and will play the originally scheduled conference game 30 minutes after its conclusion. The non-conference series finale has been cancelled.
