CALDWELL, Idaho – Just 24 hours after a tough home loss, the College of Idaho rebounded in a big way, as
Ashley Pagan led four players with double-figure kills with 18, as the Yotes knocked off No. 7-ranked Corban University in five sets inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
The No. 23 ranked Coyotes (13-6, 8-4 CCC) avenged a road loss to the Warriors with the 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 15-12 victory. C of I hit at a .282 clip on the night and held a substantial 72-54 edge in total kills.
After the Warriors (13-5, 10-2) rallied to force a winner-take-all final set,
Austyn Mauzy smashed three kills in a 7-3 C of I run, allowing the hosts to build a 14-9 lead. After Corban staved off three match points, the Yotes closed the evening with a smash from
Kaydre Thompson to complete the victory.
The visitors took a 15-13 edge in Set 1, but Pagan logged three of her six kills in the frame in an 8-0 C of I run that flipped the score and gave the hosts momentum. Set 2 featured big runs – Corban using a 12-3 push to take a 20-16 lead, only to have kills from Mauzy and
Jade Warren start a four-point run to get the hosts even. After six side-outs, consecutive Warrior hitting errors gave the Coyotes the set win.
C of I was in position to close the match out in three sets, taking a 13-10 lead in Set 3 on a
Jordyn Boswell kill. Corban battled back, getting two Adriana Aguayo kills in a 10-2 run to earn a set win and used a 9-3 Set 4 run to even the match at two sets apiece.
Pagan had 18 kills and 10 digs, Boswell had 17 kills and nine digs, with Mauzy tying a career-high with 17 kills. Warren had 10 kills and a team-best five blocks, setter
Abigail Guinn recorded 57 assists and 12 digs, libero
Drew Dobney had 26 digs, with defensive specialist
Kayla Riley recording a career-high 13 digs.
Aguayo led Corban with 10 kills, with Sarena Bartley finishing with nine kills and a team-high four blocks. Three setters shared the action, with both Cierra Leopoldino and Ciarra Judson recording 19 assists, with libero Kealani Ontai adding 18 digs and a match-high four aces.
C of I returns to action next week, hosting No. 5-ranked Eastern Oregon on Thursday at 7 p.m.
