CALDWELL, Idaho – Yvonne Valencia collected a loose ball just outside the box and drove a shot off a College of Idaho and into the left corner of the net for the lone goal of the afternoon, as Southern Oregon outlasted the College of Idaho, 1-0, at Simplot Stadium.
The Raiders (4-4, 1-1 CCC) had just four shots on goal on the day – with the game-winner in the 64th minute the only dangerous opportunity. Valencia played a corner kick into the box with the ball ricocheting back out to her, 20 yards from goal. She blasted a low shot that hit the right arm of a C of I (3-4, 1-1) player and past diving keeper
Brittany Houghton into the goal (a hand ball in the box was originally called – but waved off in favor of the goal).
The Yotes mustered just two shots on goal – with their best chance in the 52nd minute, as
Julia Fretwell pushed up for a corner kick and hit a solid header off a corner kick – right to the waiting arms of SOU keeper Hannah Ceciliani.
Southern held a 9-4 edge in total shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kick in the matchup played primarily between the 18-yard marks.
C of I returns to action next Saturday, hosting Rocky Mountain.
