Lady Yotes Split Slugfests With UBC

CALDWELL, Idaho – An 8-run second inning erased an early British Columbia lead, as the College of Idaho salvaged a Cascade Conference doubleheader split with the T-Birds at Symms Field.

UBC (5-19, 4-12 CCC) scored three late unearned runs to break a deadlock to win Game 1, 9-6, while the Lady Yotes claimed the late contest, 10-7 – their first win this season when allowing six or more runs.

The 'Birds chased C of I (15-16, 11-7) starter Colette Robert in the second inning – getting a Montana Turnovitski RBI ground out and a Shaelyn Ogilvie RBI single in the first, with Lindsey Ogilvie providing a big blow with a 3-run double in the second to extend the lead to 6-0.

While Coyote reliever Alex Kordopatis kept the hosts in the game, the C of I offense responded – scoring three runs in the bottom of the second – including an RBI ground out from Martha Tooley, a Hailey Chambers RBI single and a third run on a UBC error. Tooley cut the margin to 6-4 in the fourth with a long solo homer, with Katelyn Geyer tying the game with a two-run blast in the fifth inning.

The C of I defense let Kordopatis down in the final two innings, as an error on a bunt prolonged the sixth inning, allowing an Ogilvie sacrifice fly give the T-Birds the lead, while in the seventh, a dropped two-out pop up allowed an insurance run to score.

Zoe Gillis allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for UBC, with Ogilvie going 2-for-2 with five RBI.  Geyer was 2-for-3 with a double, homer and two RBI, while Delaney Atkins and Destiny Turner each going 2-for-4 in the loss for C of I, with Kordopatis tossing five-plus innings without allowing an earned run.

UBC raced to a 4-0 lead in Game 2, as Turnovitski ripped a two-run double in the first, with Emily Jacob and Turnovitski lacing RBI singles in the second to give the Canadian squad the lead.

C of I answered in a big way, sending 12 batters to the plate in the last of the second, recording their biggest scoring outburst of the season – all with two outs. Courtney Ellis started the rally with an RBI single, Atkins added an RBI double, Geyer walked with the bases loaded, with Chambers giving the Yotes the lead with a two-run single. Bentli Corta made it 6-4 with an RBI single, Trystin Crofts added a run with an RBI infield single and an eighth run crossed the plate on a UBC error.

It was more than enough for reliever Ali Longoria, who entered the game in the fourth inning and allowed just one run to pick up her first win of the season. Chambers and Corta each had two hits for C of I, with Turner going 2-for-2, adding a two-run single in the third inning, to extend her hit streak to 14 games.

Turnovitski was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the loss for UBC.

C of I hits the road next weekend for a four-game series at nationally-ranked Corban University.
