CALDWELL, Idaho –
Destiny Turner reached base in all seven plate appearances – including her 200th career hit – helping the College of Idaho celebrate Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Christian at Symms Field.
Turner was 3-for-3 and walked four times in the Lady Yotes (19-20, 14-10 CCC) pair of 6-1 victories, which clinched a spot in the Cascade Conference Championships. The senior upped her league-leading batting average to .556 and her on-base percentage to .646.
Fellow seniors
Ashley Pesek and
Alex Kordopatis made the most of their final series at home – Pesek tossing a complete game three hitter, striking out four, while Kordopatis limited the Beacons (4-34, 4-20) to just two hits in the nightcap.
C of I took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1, as Turner singled home a run and scored on a dropped fly ball by the NCU defense. Two innings later, the Yotes capitalized on three errors to plate four runs, with the big hit in the frame a
Trystin Crofts RBI triple into the right field corner.
NCU broke up the shutout bid in the sixth, as Jess Garner singled, stole second and scored on a C of I error – but Pesek worked out of trouble and tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the win.
Turner and
Courtney Ellis each had two hits for C of I, with Ereanna Higbee going 2-for-3 for the Beacons.
Pesek got the Yotes on the board in the second inning of Game 2, ripping an RBI single through the left side to plate
Rickey Kamimae, who led the frame off with a walk.
Madison Cushing followed with an RBI single to score
Martha Tooley, who had earlier doubled, with
Delaney Atkins adding an RBI infield single to make it 3-0.
The Beacons cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third, scoring a run without a hit – as Madi Novelli walked and eventually scored on a Caitlyn Messman sacrifice fly.
C of I made it 5-1 in the fourth, as Atkins tripled home a run and
Hailey Chambers added an RBI single, with the Yotes closing the scoring in the sixth on a Kamimae fielders' choice.
Cushing and Atkins each had a pair of hits for the Yotes in the victory, with C of I taking advantage of nine NCU walks.
The Yotes close out the regular-season next weekend with a four-game series at the University of Great Falls.
