Turner Logs Four Hits, But EOU Sweeps Doubleheader

CALDWELL, Idaho – Destiny Turner went 4-for-7 with a homer and two RBI, but it wasn't enough for the College of Idaho, as Eastern Oregon swept a doubleheader from the Lady Yotes at Symms Field.

The Mountaineers (15-8, 9-3 CCC) claimed the rubber game of the Cascade Conference series, scoring four seventh inning runs to win 6-2, while EOU hit a pair of home runs in an 8-1 victory in the non-league Game 2.

C of I (9-13, 6-6) had two separate leads in the opener – as Delaney Atkins led off the first with an infield single and took second on a wild throw. An out later, Turner ripped a double off the right-centerfield wall for a 1-0.

Eastern tied the score in the fourth on a line-drive home run by Cheyenne Barker, but the Yotes regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on a Trystin Crofts RBI single – but stranded the bases loaded.

In the fifth, Jordan Gerlach circle the bases on a triple when the Yotes right fielder slipped on the wet grass on a routine fly ball and score when the throw from the outfield eluded the C of I defense. Eastern took the lead in the seventh – as Kaitlyn Reynolds singled and moved to second on a throwing error, scoring on a Taylor Gerlach infield single. EOU added runs on RBI singles from Barker and Burchak, along with a wild pitch.

Hailey Kline got the win in relief, working around three hits and two walks, with Barker going 3-for-4 with two RBI and Burchak and Taylor Gerlach each logging two hits.  Atkins, Turner and Hailey Chambers all had two hits for the Yotes.

In the late game, EOU jumped to a 5-0 lead after three innings and were never headed. The Mounties got a Jordan Gerlach RBI double and an Alex Shuster RBI single in the second, with Burchak launching a two-run homer and Shuster lining an RBI double in the third to add to the lead.

Kline was dominant in the circle for Eastern, retiring 13-of-14 batters at one stretch, with her lone mistake, a long solo homer to right by Turner.  The Mountaineers broke the game open in the seventh, as Burchak hit her second round tripper of the day and EOU added an unearned run on a C of I error.

Five different EOU players had multi-hit games, with Burchak and Reynolds each recording three-hit games, while Turner was 2-for-3 in the loss for C of I.

The Lady Yotes return to action next week – meeting Walla Walla on Thursday – before a four-game CCC series at Northwest on Friday and Saturday.
