CALDWELL, Idaho – A strike away from victory in Game 1, the College of Idaho fell victim to a late Western Oregon rally to win the opener, with the Wolves cruising to a run-rule victory in the nightcap, sweeping the Symms Field opener for the Lady Yotes.
The Division II Wolves (8-5) won Game 1, 5-4, before pounding out 14 hits in a 9-0, five inning win in the late contest.
Western jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opener, getting a Ku'ulei Siolo RBI single in the second inning, with Chandler Bishop knocking in a run in the third on a sacrifice fly, followed by a Zoe Clark RBI single.
The Lady Yotes (1-4) answered with one swing in the bottom of the inning, as
Martha Tooley crushed a grand slam home run deep over the left-centerfield wall, giving the hosts a 4-3 lead.
Starter
Colette Robert would hold the lead until the seventh, but with two outs and two strikes, Bishop gapped a two-run double to give WOU the lead – with starter Haley Fabian getting the final three outs for the win. Kelsie Gardner and Destiny Kuehl each had three hits for Western, with five C of I hitters each recording one hit.
Game 2 was all WOU, scoring in four of the five innings played. Leading 3-0 in the fourth, the Wolves broke the game wide open, getting a two-run Kuehl double and Bishop added a run-scoring double of her own.
Starter Sammi Cadwallder limited the Coyotes to just five hits in the complete game win, with Ashley Doyle going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Wolves.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
