WEST COVINA, Calif. –
Delaney Atkins and
Martha Tooley hit safely in all three games, as the College of Idaho opened the 2017 by winning one of three games on Day 1 of the SoCal Classic, hosted by Biola University, at Big League Dreams-Covina.
The Lady Yotes (1-2) opened the grueling day with a 5-1 win over No. 25 San Diego Christian, but dropped consecutive run-rule contests – a 12-3 decision to Menlo and an 8-0 loss to Vanguard.
Atkins went 5-for-10 in the three games with a pair of doubles for the Yotes, while Tooley was 4-for-10 with a homer and a team-high four RBI.
GAME 1 - College of Idaho 5, San Diego Christian 1: Transfer
Colette Robert made a big splash in her Coyote debut, tossing a complete game 5-hitter in the circle and adding a home run in the upset win over the 25th-ranked Hawks. The lefty walked just two batters, allowed five singles and struck out five in the victory. Robert opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second, with Tooley providing the big blow of the game an inning later, blasting a three-run homer to stake the Yotes to a 4-0 lead. Atkins added an RBI single in the fourth to cap C of I's scoring. Robert was 3-for-3, with Tooley, Atkins and
Courtney Ellis all recording two hits. Victoria Harris had the lone RBI for SDCC, a fifth inning RBI single.
GAME 2 - Menlo 12, College of Idaho 3 (5 inn.): C of I could not hold a 2-0 first inning lead, as the Oaks turned two Coyote errors into six unearned runs in the five inning victory. RBI singles from Tooley and
Hailey Chambers in the open frame gave the Yotes the early lead, but a fielding error in the bottom of the inning led to two unearned runs, with a Natalie Dorsey two-run single in the second giving Menlo the lead for good. MC would break the game open with a five-run third, including a Dorsey grand slam homer.
Rickey Kamimae had two hits for C of I, with
Ashley Pesek allowing 10 runs on eight hits in the loss.
GAME 3 - Vanguard 8, College of Idaho 0 (6 inn.):Courtney Thornhill threw five shutout innings, allowing just four hits, in the Lions six inning win. A two-run double from Lindsey Gilmore and an RBI double Summer Penner keyed a four-run third inning to give VU a 5-0 lead - as the Lions pounded out 12 hits in their victory. Both
Kristin Paulazzo and Atkins had two hits for C of I, with
Alex Kordopatis taking the loss in the circle - allowing five earned runs on 10 hits.
C of I was to play three games on Friday, however, all games have been postponed due to projected rain in the Los Angeles Basin.
