ASHLAND, Ore. - A big fourth inning for each team this afternoon led to the College of Idaho and Southern Oregon splitting a Cascade Conference softball doubleheader at University Field.
The Lady Yotes (13-19, 4-6 CCC) used a five-run fourth to pull away for a 10-3 win in Game 1, while SOU used a four-run fourth inning in Game 2 to win, 4-3.
In the opener, C of I took a 2-0 first inning lead on the strength of a Katie Rowe RBI single and a Rickey Kamimae RBI hit by pitch. The Raiders (22-16, 3-7) pulled even with single runs in the next two frames - getting an RBI double from Allie Painter in the second and a Gina Ayala RBI double in the third.
The Coyotes regained control in the fourth, as RBI singles by Destiny Turner and Rowe was followed by a two-run single from Alexis Macias. Â A Chelsea Szymanski sacrifice fly made it 7-2. Â
It was more than enough for Cortni Pena, who worked around nine hits to pick up her ninth win of the season. Â Kristin Paulazzo had three of C of I's 15 hits in the victory, with Rowe, Courtney Ellis, Destiny Campbell, and Jodie Hoagland each recording two hits.
C of I opened Game 2 in a similar fashion, getting RBI singles by Turner and Hailey Chambers in the first to take a 2-0 lead, with Turner making it 3-0 in the second with a run scoring hit.
SOU stranded five runners in the first three innings, but finally broke through in the fourth. Â Tyler Burke singled in a run, Alexa Gonzalez lifted a sacrifice fly, with a Krista Ahern single bringing home the tying run, with the go-ahead run scoring on a C of I error.
It was enough for Brianne Craig, who despite allowing 11 hits, did not allow a C of I runner in scoring position over the final three innings.
Szymanski, Turner, and Campbell all had two hits in the loss for the Lady Yotes.
C of I returns to action tomorrow at Oregon Tech.
