Box Score 2 HELENA, Mont. – The College of Idaho opened up play at the Big Sky Challenge with a tough five-set loss to host Carroll College, but rebounded to toppled Great Falls in four sets inside the Carroll P.E. Center.
Carroll 3, College of Idaho 2 (17-25, 25-14, 25-15, 22-25, 18-16): The Saints (5-5) ended a long losing skid to the Lady Yotes by staving off three match points in the winner-take-all fifth set. Cali Prestwood roped a spike to break a 16-16 tie in Set 5, with a C of I error giving the hosts the win.
The Lady Yotes (2-5) sprinted out to an 18-7 lead in Set 1 and were never threatened, but the Saints answered with a 5-0 run in Set 2 to take a 19-11 lead, and jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Set 3 to take control of the match.
C of I trailed 20-17 in Set 4, but four attack errors by the Saints helped the Yotes end the frame on an 8-2 run to force Set 5. In the finale, the Coyotes scored six-straight points to grab a 13-10 lead, but the hosts took advantage of three late C of I hitting errors to steal the win.
Emily Ottinger had 13 kills and Kylie Porter recorded 11 kills and four blocks in the loss, with Sierra Porter recording 25 kills and 10 digs. Prestwood, Kathleen Mulligan, and Crystal Schmidt each had 14 kills for the Saints.
College of Idaho 3, Great Falls 1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23): The Lady Yotes ended a five-match losing streak with the four-set win over the Argonauts.
The Yotes used an 11-3 run early in Set 1 to erase a 7-4 Argonaut lead and held on for the set win. C of I held a 19-12 lead in Set 2, but Alyssa McEwan had four kills in a UGF 11-2 run to even the match.
C of I took control of Set 3 with a five-point run midway through the frame to take a 19-12 lead, while in Set 4, Kylie Porter and Bailee Kendall each had three kills in a late 6-2 run to win the match.
Ottinger had 15 kills to lead the Yotes, with Kendall recording a season-high 14. Jayde Folsom had 29 assists, with Cheyan Coburn adding 25 digs. McEwan led UGF with 11 kills.
C of I returns to action tomorrow in Butte, meeting Montana Tech and Westminster.
