Lady Yotes and Oregon Tech Split on Senior Day

The nine C of I softball student-athletes after their between game ceremony
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CALDWELL, Idaho – Nickayla Skinner tossed four innings of one-hit relief to lead College of Idaho to a Game 1 win, but Cassidy Olson slugged a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh and won the game with a two-run shot in the ninth, as Oregon Tech salvaged the split at Symms Field.

The No. 24 ranked Lady Yotes (22-12, 14-8 CCC) earned a 7-3 victory in the Senior Day opener, but No. 16 ranked OIT battled back for a 10-8 extra inning victory in Game 2.

The Owls (24-8, 15-3) took a 1-0 lead in Game 1 on a Tre Sullivan RBI single, but C of I answered in the second.  Kaci Baldwin tied the game with an RBI double, with Briana Brace giving the Yotes the lead with a ringing double into the left-center gap.

A leadoff homer in the third by Alexis Macias in the third extended C of I's lead to 4-1, but Tech got back-to-back homers on consecutive pitches from Alyssa Davis and Cassidy Hoglund in the fourth to get within 4-3.  Enter Skinner, who allowed just one hit the rest of the way and fanned three to pick up her 15th win of the year.

The Yotes put the game away in the sixth, getting an RBI single by Kendall Pavey and a two-run single from Brace – who was 3-for-4 with four RBI in the victory.  Sullivan had two hits in the loss for OIT.

C of I struck first in Game 2, as a bloop Destiny Turner double and a Skinner RBI single in the first staked the Yotes to a 2-0 lead.  Tech answered back, taking advantage of three Coyote errors in the second, plating five runs – including a successful squeeze bunt and a steal of home – to grab a 5-2 edge.

A two-out throwing error by the Owls allowed two C of I runs to score in the bottom of the second, as the Yotes closed within 5-4.  Trailing 6-4 in the fourth, the hosts got a big two-run triple from Turner, part of a four-run inning, to retake the lead at 8-6.

It would stay that way until the seventh, when Hoglund singled and Olson followed with a long blast to left to force extra innings.  C of I nearly won it in the eighth, as Brace narrowly missed a homer – with her liner hitting the top of the left field wall – settling for a double, but was stranded.  In the ninth, Hoglund doubled to left and Olson hammered a 3-2 pitch deep over the left field wall to give Tech the lead – with Rylee Carlton earning the win with eight strong innings of relief.

Turner, Skinner, and Paige Gabiola each had two hits for the Yotes, with Hoglund and Olson each logging three hits for OIT.

C of I hits the road next weekend for road games at Northwest Christian and Corban.
