CALDWELL, Idaho – Nickayla Skinner tossed a four-hit shutout to lead the College of Idaho to an 8-0 victory in Game 1 today, but Northwest Christian stymied the Coyote bats in a 3-2 victory to cap the twin bill at Symms Field.
Skinner struck out six batters and added a pair of RBI to help her cause, recording her fourth shutout of the 2014 season and the 25th of her career. She did not allow an NCU (5-18, 4-8) to reach second base in the victory.
The Yotes (16-10, 8-6 CCC) plated two runs in the opening inning, loading the bases with one out – scoring a run when Katie Rowe was hit by a pitch and another on a Skinner sacrifice fly. C of I extended the lead to 4-0 in the third, as Skinner lined an RBI single and Rowe scored on a double steal.
C of I ended the game in the sixth inning, as Paige Gabiola smacked a three-run homer, her third of the season, with the winning run scoring on a Beacons error with the bases loaded.
No player for either team had more than one hit in the contest.
The Beacons salvaged the final game of the road trip, thanks to the arm of hurler Janieve Boyles, who stymied the Yotes bats – holding C of I to just five hits.
A second inning RBI double by Chelsea Hannon got NCU on the board, extending the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI double by Addy Hoskins and a Jill Suratt RBI single. C of I chipped away at the deficit, scoring a run on a passed ball in the fifth, then cutting the margin to 3-2 in the seventh on a pinch hit solo homer from Destiny Turner. The Yotes put the tying run at second base with two outs in the final frame, but Boyles coaxed a fly ball out to record the complete game victory.
Hoskins had the lone multi-hit line in Game 2, going 3-for-4.
C of I continues the home stand this weekend, hosting Northwest on Friday and Concordia on Saturday.
