Lady Yotes Split Sunday Doubleheader with Corban

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CALDWELL, Idaho – Nickayla Skinner fanned 12 batters and Destiny Turner went 3-for-3 in an opening win for the College of Idaho, but Corban University hit five home runs in the late game, salvaging a doubleheader split at Symms Field.

The No. 22 ranked Lady Yotes (15-9, 7-5 CCC) won Game 1, 5-1, but the visiting Warriors erased a 6-1 deficit in Game 2, hanging on for an 11-10 victory.

While Skinner mowed down the Corban (16-12, 3-7) lineup, C of I opened the scoring in the second inning. With two on and two out, Cortni Pena doubled off the left field wall, plating both runners, giving the Yotes a 2-0 lead.

After the Warriors got on the board in the fourth on a Coyote throwing error, C of I answered back in the bottom of the frame as Turner led off with a triple and scored on a McKensie Stanton sacrifice fly. The hosts would put the game away in the sixth, getting RBI singles from Pena and Briana Brace.

Skinner worked around six hits for her ninth win, with Pena and Brace each logging two hits. Annie Owen was 2-for-4 for Corban, with Jessica Slate taking the loss in the circle.

Owen led off Game 2 with a bang for the Warriors, clubbing a long solo homer to left. However, the lead did not last long, as Alexis Macias tied the game with a RBI double. The Yotes would score a pair of runs on wild pitches, with Pena making it 5-1 with a two-run single.

An inning later, the Coyotes extended the lead to 6-1 on a Macias RBI double – but watched as the Warriors scored 10 straight runs in the middle innings to retake the lead. A third inning Owen two-run homer and a bases loaded hit by pitch to Kylie Durre cut the deficit to 6-4. In the fourth, Shelby Mauermann cut the lead to one with a solo homer, with Corban tying the game on a two-out Kyrianna Sorensen RBI single.

A two-run homer by Lounette Jackson in the fifth gave the Warriors a 8-6 lead, while an inning later, Corban added three more runs – two coming on a Breonna Bejaran homer.

C of I battled back, as sixth inning RBI singles by Brace and Macias cut the lead to 11-8 – but the Yotes left the bases loaded. Brace came through again in the seventh, doubling home a pair with two outs, but with two runners on, Macias grounded out to third to end the game.

Sam Gutwig got the win in relief for the Warriors, allowing two runs in four innings of work. Owen was 3-for-4, with Sorensen going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored in the victory. Brace and Macias each had three hits and three RBI for C of I, with Pena taking the loss in the circle – despite helping her own cause offensively with three hits.

The Lady Yotes return to action tomorrow, hosting Northwest Christian in a noon doubleheader.
