ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon jumped to first inning leads in both ends of today's doubleheader, sweeping aside the College of Idaho, 6-2 and 2-0, at University Field.
The Raiders (8-8, 7-1 CCC) completed a weekend sweep at home and remain a game back of first place in the Cascade Conference standings, while the No. 15 ranked Lady Yotes (12-8, 4-4) went winless on their four-game exodus.
SOU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning of Game 1, as Sulie Augustine gapped a two-run triple and scored on a Julia Willison sacrifice fly.
C of I answered in the third, as Ashley Van Horne scored a pair with a one-out triple, but was left stranded at third. The Yotes had only one hit the rest of the way against Brianne Craig, who struck out one in the victory.
The Raiders broke the game open in the fourth on a two-run Ashley Lowe double, adding an insurance run on a Coyote error in the fifth.
Nickayla Skinner struck out nine in the losing effort for C of I, with Lowe, Sierra Anderson, and Tyler Burke all recording two hits for SOU.
Game 2 was a pitchers' duel, with Southern taking advantage of a two-out C of I error in the first to plate a run. The Raiders would extend the lead to 2-0 in the fifth on an Alexa Gonzalez RBI single.
The Yotes would put runners in scoring position in the first, second, and sixth innings, but could not break through against Sydney White, who tossed a three-hit shutout.
Cortni Pena was the tough-luck loser for the Yotes, allowing just three hits and fanning five in the loss.
The Lady Yotes return to action on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Eastern Oregon for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
