NAMPA, Idaho – Nickayla Skinner set a school record with three doubles, while tossing a one-hitter in the circle, as The College of Idaho routed Northwest Nazarene, 17-1, at Halle Field.
Skinner led a potent 16-hit attack by the Lady Yotes (8-4), breaking the school record of two doubles, achieved 41 previous times prior to today. The senior also tossed her school-record sixth one-hitter, allowing only a fourth inning solo homer by Whitney Carlton.
It didn't take long for C of I to take the lead, as the Yotes strung together four straight two-out hits. Destiny Turner had an infield single to plate Briana Brace, who led off the game with a single. Following a Katie Rowe single, Skinner doubled home two, with McKensie Staton following with a long two-run homer to center to make it 5-0.
The Yotes added five more runs in the second – with Rowe providing the big blast with a two-run homer. A Brace RBI double in the third made it 11-0; with back-to-back RBI doubles by Rowe and Skinner in the fourth making it 13-0.
It was more than enough for Skinner, who walked one and struck out nine for her fifth win of 2014. Brace went 3-for-3 with two RBI; Rowe went 3-for-3 with three RBI, with Skinner going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
Game 2 of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be made up at a later date.
