CALDWELL, Idaho – Nickayla Skinner tossed a one-hit shutout in Game 1 and Paige Gabiola slugged a go-ahead three-run homer in Game 2, as The College of Idaho swept a pair of games this afternoon at Symms Field.
The Lady Yotes (4-3) opened with a 7-0 blanking of Great Falls, followed by a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over British Columbia.
Skinner was the story in the opener, allowing only a second inning Brittney Robbins single, as the senior won her 60th career game and logged her 22nd career shutout. The righty walked just one batter and struck out eight.
C of I opened the scoring in the second, as Briana Brace laced a two-out, two-run single to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Two innings later, Gabiola lined a home run to make it 3-0, with the Yotes breaking the game open in the sixth – as Alexis Macias doubled home a run and both Destiny Turner and McKensie Stanton added RBI singles.
Macias went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the win, with Stanton and Gabiola each adding two hits.
The Yotes took a 1-0 lead in Game 2 in the third, as Ashley Van Horne singled home Madison Cushing for the first run on the tilt.
C of I starter, Cortni Pena, took a no-hitter into the fifth, but UBC (5-7) strung together four-straight hits in frame. Kelly Rumley tied the score with an RBI double; Carlyn Shimizu gave the T-Birds the lead with a run-scoring single; with Shayla Kaplen lining an RBI double to make it 3-1.
The hosts did not quit, as Macias and Pena each singled, and with two outs, Gabiola crushed a three-run homer to give C of I the lead. Pena worked out of a first-and-third jam in the seventh to pick up the victory – allowing four hits and four walks in the complete game effort.
No player for either team had more than one hit.
The Yotes meet both teams again on Saturday, facing Great Falls at Noon and UBC at 2:30 p.m.
