CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Briana Brace went a combined 4-for-7 with a homer and three RBI, helping The College of Idaho to a split of Northwest Cup games at Hood View Park.
The Lady Yotes (2-3) opened the day with an 8-6 loss to British Columbia, but closed the day with a 4-3 victory over a Division II St. Martin's squad.
In Game 1, UBC (3-3) used a pair of home runs in a six-run second inning to grab a big lead. Olivia Zwick launched a three-run homer, while an out later, Kelly Rumley added a two-run shot to pace the T-Birds.
C of I got two runs back in the third on an Alexis Macias two-run double, but UBC added a run in the fourth, taking advantage of four Coyote walks.
A Brace RBI single and a two-run Macias single pulled the Yotes within 7-5, with C of I scoring a run in the seventh on an error and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but could not score.
Leigh Della Siega threw five and two-third innings of five run ball to pick up the win, with Zwick going 2-for-2 with four RBI in the victory.
Alex Kordopatis took the loss in her C of I debut, allowing eight runs and eight walks in a complete game effort. Macias went 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Yotes.
SMU (2-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2, as Taviah Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to give the Saints the lead. Brace answered for the Yotes, leading off the bottom of the inning with her second homer of the season, with C of I taking advantage of two errors in the inning to plate a pair of runs.
A Brace RBI single in the third gave C of I a 4-2 lead, but the Saints took advantage of a two-out Coyote error to plate a run in the fourth. However, Nickayla Skinner buckled down, retiring the final nine batters to pick up the victory.
Skinner allowed nine hits, and fanned five for the win, with freshman Madison Cushing going 2-for-4 for the Yotes. Lacey McGladrey and Dani Wall each had two hits for SMU.
C of I returns to action next weekend, hosting the five-team C of I/NNU Challenge, beginning Friday.
