Lady Yotes Split Rainy Games in Portland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLACKAMAS, Ore. – Battling a constant rain throughout the day, The College of Idaho split a pair of games on Day 1 of the Northwest Cup at Hood View Park.

The Lady Yotes (1-2) rallied for a come-from-behind 7-3 victory over Simpson in their opener, but watch Pacific Lutheran turn the tables in a back-and-forth 8-7 decision.

Game 1 saw the Yotes jump out to a 2-0 lead in the third – getting RBI doubles from Ashley Van Horne and Destiny Turner – but the Redhawks (4-1) grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fifth on one swing, a three-run Kaylana Mah homer. C of I answered in the bottom of the frame, as Briana Brace singled, stole second, and scored on an SU error to tie the game, with Alexis Macias following with a base hit to give the Yotes a 4-3 lead.

The Coyotes would put the game away in the sixth, as Brace slugged a two-run home run and Turner added an RBI single.

Nickayla Skinner went the distance in the circle, allowing five hits and striking out six for the victory, with Brace going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Van Horne, Turner, and Katie Rowe all added two hits for the Coyotes.

C of I took a 1-0 lead in their opening at bat of Game 2, as Turner delivered an RBI ground out. However, PLU (1-0) took advantage of three walks and a pair of hits to score two in the second, then got a two-run Allison Behrends single in the third to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Yotes cut into the deficit in the fourth, as Cortni Pena helped her own cause with a two-run double, while an inning later, RBI singles by Kendall Pavey and Julie Henrie gave C of I a 5-4 – but the Purple and Gold squandered a bases loaded, one-out opportunity – three of 13 runners left on base.

The Lutes regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Lindsey Matsunaga, then added two insurance runs in the sixth – which were much needed. A two-out RBI single by Van Horne, and an Alexis Macias RBI double got the Yotes within a run, but Turner grounded out to third to end the game.

Kaci Baldwin went 3-for-3 and Macias added two hits for the Yotes. Pena took the loss, allowing eight runs on 12 hits with six walks in the complete game effort. Kelsey Robinson got the win, despite allowing 12 hits and walking eight for PLU, while going 3-for-3 at the plate to help her cause.

C of I returns to action tomorrow, meeting British Columbia and St. Martin's.
