Lady Yotes Drop Pair on Day 2 in California

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The College of Idaho battled hard against a pair of quality Golden State Athletic Conference foes at the Red Lion Summer Slam Tournament, but fell in two four-set contests inside Chase Gymanasium.

The Lady Yotes dropped a morning tilt with ninth-ranked The Master's (25-21, 25-14, 12-25, 25-21), while falling to Vanguard (27-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23) in the evening match-up

MATCH 1

The Master's Box Score

Things looked good early on in Set 1, as the Yotes sprinted out to an 11-5 lead on the strength of four Sofia Anxo kills. However, the Mustangs (2-1) got kills from five different players in a 7-1 surge to even the set. A fifth Anxo spike gave C of I their final lead at 16-15, before two Sam Dougherty kills keyed a 5-0 run to put the set away from TMC.

The middle sets were runaways – as the Mustangs jumped out to an 11-4 lead in Set 2 and cruised, while in Set 3, the Yotes used a 7-0 run to lead 13-4 and extended the match.

Anxo had four kills and Liz Myers added three kills in helping C of I to a 19-15 lead in Set 4, but Doughtery had three aces in an eight point TMC push that secured the match.

Dougherty led all players with 18 kills, 18 digs, and five aces, with Allison Childs recording 10 kills for TMC.

The Yotes were led by a career-high 16 kills from Anxo, with Kylee Nawahine adding 10 kills. Sierra Porter had 38 assists and 14 digs in the loss.

MATCH 2

Vanguard Box Score

Set 1 was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams deadlocking on 12 occasions up through 22-22, when a Lions error and a Myers kill gave C of I set point. However a Jessica Neves kill and a bad set by the Yotes got VU even – and after an Anxo kill, the California squad ran off three straight points to steal the set win.

Vanguard grabbed control of the second set with a 8-1 surge to take a 14-7 and earned the win, while in Set 3, the Yotes used a six-point and seven-point run to keep the match alive to force Set 4.

C of I fell behind 7-1 early in Set 4 but battled back, getting a pair of Lili Brochado kills to help square the frame at 12-12. A Myers kill gave the Yotes a 23-22 lead, but after a timeout, VU earned a sideout, followed by back-to-back Rachael Barker kills to close out the match for the Lions.

Barker had 15 kills and Neves added 14 for VU in the win, while Myers led the Lady Yotes with 13 kills and three blocks and Anxo had 10 kills, five blocks, and nine digs.
