Lady Yotes Struggle on Final Day in Oregon

Molly Mills extended her hit streak to 20 games
CLACKAMAS, Ore. - College of Idaho opponents combined for five home runs and took advantage of nine unearned runs, as British Columbia defeated the Lady Yotes, 15-8, and Simpson topped the Purple and Gold, 12-4, on the final day of the Northwest Cup at Hood View Park.

UBC Box Score  Simpson Box Score

UBC (6-7) pounded out 14 hits and rallied from a 7-5 deficit to earn the victory, while Simpson jumped out to an 8-0 lead and cruised to their second win in three chances against the Yotes (7-5).

In Game 1, the T-Birds jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on the strength of an Alana Westerhof three-run homer.  The C of I responded with a four-run second - including a Nickayla Skinner two-run double and a Molly Mills RBI infield single, but Molly Gosnell doubled home two in the third to give UBC a 5-4 lead.

The Coyotes came right back, taking the lead on a two-run Rachael Strong double in the bottom of the inning, making it 7-5 on a bases loaded Kayla Webb walk.  Unfortunately, an error in the fourth helped UBC plate four unearned runs - with a Lindsey McElroy two-run single giving the T-Birds the lead for good.

A Strong RBI single in the fourth got the Yotes within a run, but a double-play ball by Skinner with the bases loaded ended the threat.  McElroy and Gosnell hit back-to-back homers in the sixth and Cassandra Dypchey hit a three-run shot in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Skinner struggled in the circle for the Yotes, allowing eight earned runs on 11 hits, to take the loss.  Strong went 3-for-4 with three RBI, with Alexis Macias going 2-for-4.  Carlyn Shimizu went 4-for-4 with four runs scored for UBC, as Nicole Day allowed one run in relief for the win.

The Redhawks (6-7) started Game 2 with a bang, scoring five unearned runs in the opening frame - thanks to a pair of C of I errors.  Marisa Marmolejo had the big blow with a two-run single. An inning later, Kara Wall smashed a two-run homer that extended the lead to 8-0.

The C of I got on the board in the third, as Macias slugged a two-run homer, but Simpson plated four in their third - including three bases loaded walks from starter Cortni Pena, to extend the lead to 12-2.  The Yotes would cap the scoring in the fourth on a wild pitch and a Molly Mills RBI groundout.

Emily Stokes got the win for the Redhawks, allowing five hits and striking out seven, while Pena allowed six hits, six walks, and six strikeouts in the loss.  Katie Rowe had two doubles for the Yotes, with Mills going 1-for-3, extending her school-record hit streak to 20 games.

The Lady Yotes return home next weekend to host six games in three days - a Friday doubleheader vs. Great Falls, and a Saturday-Sunday four-game series against St. Martin's.
