Big Second Half Helps Northwest Past Lady Yotes, 7-1

Box Score

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University scored two goals in a two-minute stretch of the first half to break a 1-1 tie, as the Eagles rolled to a 7-1 Cascade Conference women's soccer victory over The College of Idaho.

The win for NU (7-5-1, 3-0-1 CCC) kept the hosts in the hunt for the CCC title, while the Lady Yotes dropped their fourth-straight match.

The hosts opened the scoring in the sixth minute, as Jessie Nicholl chipped an eight-yard shot off the left post and in to give NU a 1-0 lead. However, C of I (3-9, 1-4) answered in the 33rd minute, as Summer Jackson delivered a nifty through-ball to Sarah Hicks, who hammered a left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net to square the score.

The momentum for the Yotes did not last, as the Eagles took the lead for good at the end of the 35th minute, when Acacia Johnson drove a Rachel Saleen pass into the lower left corner of the net for a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, as Saleen flicked home a Kelsey Greene corner kick – giving NU a two-goal lead at the break.

The Eagles broke the game open in the second half – as Shea Samuelsen chipped a free kick over keeper Aimee Pierson's head from 25-yards out in the 49th minute for a 4-1 lead. In the 60th minute, Samuelsen played a cross to the far post, with Jessica Oliver heading home NU's fifth goal of the match. The hosts would tack on two goals in the final two minutes to cap the scoring.

The Eagles held a 17-12 edge in total shots, as NU keeper Patty Hughes made five saves in the victory.

C of I returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Evergreen for a 1 p.m. start.
