GULF SHORES, Ala. –
Brooks Ney capped his collegiate career with a ninth-place finish in the decathlon on Day 2 of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
The senior recorded a pair of personal best marks on the day – working through an early weather delay – to tie his career-best score of 6,357 points.
Ney opened the morning with a 15.72-second time in the 110-meter hurdles and following a lightning delay, placed fifth in the discus with a personal best throw of 33.95 meters. After clearing 4.15 meters in the pole vault and a 42.89 throw in the javelin, he clocked a time of 4:39.61 in the 1,500-meters – another personal best – finishing 102 points away from a podium finish.
In the 5,000-meters,
Alex Martin punched his ticket to tomorrow's championship final, placing fifth in the faster of two preliminary sections – recording a time of 15:20.94. Teammate
Marcos Cervantes, who earned All-America honors last night in the 10,000-meters, took 20th of 25 racers, with his time of 15:39.06 a full 12-seconds shy of a spot in the final.
Martin will be joined on the track tomorrow by
Dylan Haas – who will race in the final of the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
