FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Three school records were broken and nine new NAIA qualifying marks were established by the College of Idaho on Day 1 of the Husky Invitational inside King County Aquatics Center.
Three of the marks set by the Yotes on the day were the No. 1 times in the NAIA this season.
Dylan Osborne and
Jon Jennings dueled in the 50-yard freestyle, each breaking the previous school record in reaching the evening "B" finals. Jennings broke the record with a time of 21.31 seconds in the prelims – hitting the NAIA "A" mark, only to see Osborne surpass that mark later in the heat with a time of 21.12. In the finals, Jennings got the best of Osborne – but his second-place time of 21.15 just missed regaining the record. The duo now have the No. 1 and No. 2 times in the NAIA this season.
Three others hit national cuts in the 50-free –
Cooper Salmen recording an auto mark (21.61) in taking sixth in the D Final; with both
Matthew Kahlig (22.39) and
Patrick Shutt (22.49) hitting the "B" mark.
The two Coyote relay teams were dominant – each establishing new school records. The grouping of Jennings, Kahlig, Osborne and Ian George in the 200-yard freestyle touched the wall in a record time of 1:26.04, while the 400-yard medley relay team of Jennings, Osborne, Salmen and
Andrew Clifford finished sixth overall with a time of 3:29.49 – recording the fastest time in the NAIA by nearly three seconds.
Clifford reached the "B" final in the 200-yard IM, recording the third-fastest time in program history in placing fifth (1:54.71). Freshman
Ian Locke hit the "B" qualifying mark in the event (2:02.89).
In the 500-yard freestyle –
Thomas Sheridan improved his "A" mark with the third-fastest time by a Coyote (4:44.53) – and the fastest in the NAIA this fall. Three others –
Graham Williams (4:49.35),
Ian Jenkins (4:49.94) and Kahlig (4:51.97) all hit auto qualifiers, with
Ethan Broadbent (4:59.09) hitting a bonus cut.
Day 2 of the meet begins Saturday at 9 a.m. (PT)
