AT COLLEGE OF IDAHO: Smith started his career at the College of Idaho in 2004 as the head coach of the men's soccer team as well as the director of soccer. In 2012 he was the head coach of both the women's and men's soccer teams. Then in 2013, his focused transitioned entirely to the women's soccer team. He finished with the men's team holding a 82-64-14 record in charge of the men. Going into the 2026 season, he holds a 153-78-27 for the women's team. He is the winningest coach in both percent and number.

CERTIFICATION: USSF Class "A" License.

HONORS: As head coach of the Coyote men's program, Smith was named Cascade Conference Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2006, 2008, and 2010 seasons. He was named the Cascade Conference Coach of the Year following the 2020-21 spring women's season. He has coached 59 All-CCC performers; 46 NAIA Scholar-Athletes; and seven NAIA All-Americans in his time as Director of Soccer.

POSTSEASON: Smith has guided his women's teams to national qualification in 2025, 2024 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020.  In 2006, his men's squad advanced to the NAIA Region I tournament semifinals, before losing to eventual champion, Westminster, while in 2008, his men's team defeated Warner Pacific in the CCC semifinals, before dropping a 2-1 decision to Concordia in the title game.  In 2010, his men's team lost a CCC semifinal to Warner Pacific in penalty kicks, while in 2014, his women's squad dropped a 2-0 decision to Warner Pacific in the CCC quarterfinals. In 2015, the Yotes equaled the school record with 14 wins and advanced to the CCC semifinals; in 2016 - C of I was eliminated in the CCC quarterfinals in a penalty kick shootout against Carroll; while in 2017, the Yotes defeated Rocky Mountain in the CCC quarterfinals in a penalty kick shootout, before losing to Eastern Oregon in the semifinals. In 2018, his squad defeated Oregon Tech in penalty kicks in the CCC quarterfinals, before dropping a decision to Northwest in the semifinals, while in 2019, a late goal eliminated C of I in the CCC quarterfinals in a 1-0 loss to Rocky Mountain. During the 2020-21 spring season, Smith led the Yotes to the Cascade Conference East Division title, earning the program a spot in the NAIA Women's Soccer Championship Opening Round for the first time in school history. In the 2023 season, his dominant team only lost once going into the opening round of the NAIA tournament. For the first time in program history, the women's team was selected to host a second round opponent after receiving a bye for the first round. The Yotes would go on to lose 1-0 to the traveling Keiser. In the 2024 season, the Yotes would once again host the NAIA Second Round but would advance to the NAIA Final Site for the first time in program history after defeating Westcliff Univ. (Calif.) 2-1. The Yotes went to the final site in Pensacola, Fla. and won their round of sixteen and quarterfinal games against Marian Univ. (Ind.) and Univ. of California respectively. The Yotes finished as semifinalists, falling to eventual champions SCAD Univ. (S.C.) 2-0. The loss to SCAD was the only loss of the season for the Yotes. Women's soccer would once again host the 2025 NAIA Second Round and defeat Masters Univ. (Calif.) in PKs to once again qualify for the NAIA Final Site in Pensacola. They ended their season in the round of 16 after falling to University of Cumberlands (Ky.) 3-2 in extra time. 

CHAMPIONSHIPS: Smith led the Coyote men to a CCC co-championship in 2006, while in 2008, helped C of I to the only unbeaten, untied regular-season in CCC history in winning the South Division crown. In the spring of 2020-21, Smith led the women's soccer program to the CCC East Division crown. He has led the Yotes to regular season conference championships in 2025, 2024, and 2023. He and the Yotes won the CCC tournament championships in 2025, 2024, and 2023.

HIGHLIGHTS: In 2006, Smith helped the Coyote men win eight-straight games at the end of the season to claim a share of the CCC regular-season title; while in 2008, his Yotes won a school-record 13-straight games to win the South Division crown.  In 2011, his Yotes got a last-second goal from keeper Aaron Reynolds to earn a draw vs. No. 12 Concordia; in 2014, his women's team picked up the biggest win in program history, defeating No. 1 ranked Concordia, 1-0; while in 2015, his squad placed second in the CCC regular-season standings, finishing 14-4 overall. Smith helped bring the 2020-21 spring women's soccer team to a CCC East Division title and a spot at nationals.

BEFORE C OF I: Had a highly successful high school coaching career, coaching the Timberline High boys program from 1999-01 and the girls program in 2002 and 2003.  Smith was named Idaho 5A Coach of the year in 2001 and Southern Idaho Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. He also was a teacher at Timberline high school.

PERSONAL: A 1994 graduate of the College with a political science degree, Smith was a four-year letterwinner and helped C of I to a 35-21-1 record as a player for longtime coach, John Calpin, earning All-District honors. He has served as a coach with the Boise National Soccer Club; the Les Bois United Soccer Club; and with the Idaho Olympic Development Program - while previously serving as a team coach with Boise Timbers/Thorns FC and their entry in the ECNL.
